Wisdom teeth assessment and removal

Wisdom teeth removal is considered when a third molar is causing, or is likely to cause, problems such as repeated infection, decay, damage, pain or difficulty with cleaning.

Not every wisdom tooth needs to be removed. The decision depends on symptoms, position, cleaning access, nearby teeth and the risks of leaving the tooth compared with treatment.

Impacted or partly erupted wisdom teeth can be difficult to keep healthy

When a wisdom tooth does not erupt into a cleanable position, the surrounding gum may become inflamed or infected. The tooth or the tooth in front can also develop decay. Assessment helps determine whether monitoring, local care, removal or referral is appropriate.

01

Repeated gum swelling

Tender or swollen gum behind the last tooth, a bad taste or difficulty opening may indicate inflammation or infection.

02

Pain at the back of the jaw

Pain can have several causes, so an examination is needed before attributing it to wisdom teeth.

03

Decay or cleaning difficulty

A partly erupted or awkwardly positioned tooth can be hard to brush and may affect the neighbouring tooth.

04

Finding on an X-ray

A wisdom tooth may be assessed because of its position, nearby structures or a change seen on imaging.

What to expect

Assessment and planning

Treatment recommendations depend on the findings, your health history and your preferences.

01

Clinical assessment

Review symptoms, medical history, mouth opening, gum condition and the visible part of the tooth.

02

Imaging and risk review

Use suitable X-rays to assess position, roots and nearby anatomy before recommending treatment.

03

Removal or referral

Discuss the treatment setting, expected recovery and any referral requirements. The treating clinician will confirm anaesthetic arrangements.

Common questions

Questions about wisdom teeth removal

This page provides general information. A dentist needs to assess your mouth before recommending treatment. Risks, benefits, alternatives and likely costs vary.

Does every wisdom tooth need to be removed?

No. A healthy wisdom tooth that is functional, cleanable and not harming nearby structures may be monitored. Removal should be recommended for a clinical reason.

How will the dentist assess my wisdom teeth?

Assessment usually includes symptoms, examination and suitable X-rays to review tooth position, roots, nearby teeth and relevant anatomy.

Is wisdom tooth removal painful?

Local anaesthetic is used to numb the area during treatment. Some swelling and discomfort are expected afterwards; the team will explain appropriate aftercare and pain management.

How long does recovery take?

Recovery varies with the number and complexity of teeth removed and individual healing. Your dentist will provide instructions and explain when to seek review.

Will I need someone to drive me home?

Ask the treating provider what assistance or transport you will need after the planned treatment. Follow their specific instructions before arranging to drive.

When is wisdom tooth pain urgent?

Seek prompt care for increasing swelling, fever, difficulty swallowing, restricted breathing or severe symptoms. Breathing difficulty or major swelling requires emergency medical attention.
